Shilka,

Macs do have a few things going for them..........Macs have had a UNIX core for a long time, and they attract a more computer savvy base than Windows.

Also, Macs now run Microsoft Office applications.

I would consider myself relatively computer savvy, but I'm getting tired of the Windows world.

I don't play video games, and as long as Microsoft Office exists on Macs, I would rather go with a Mac b/c I have a great multimedia system with UNIX stability under the hood.

I understand there's a lot of applications for Windows, and that's the only reason Windows is dominant.

But you have to buy those applications for Microsoft just like for Mac, and Windows is very bare after a re-install.

Do you see where we are getting. That Mac runs on a lot of Microsoft applications without offering anything to Microsoft. Why buy a blue car that looks violet when you can just buy a violet car? That pretty much sums up the PC/Mac dilemma.

The biggest difference for small businesses and corporations alike, example being the one I work at -- is that Mac is limited in terms of software modification, whereas PC is literally open-ended. You can take Vista home edition and turn it into premium with some handy work and application additions, but Mac OS are usually more like 'you get what you get and that's that.'

I guess my point is that Microsoft is Modification-friendly, open to change, just more fun to tweak and play with because of the open-ended possibilities, where as Mac has everything pre-built and your mind really can't wander off.

Shilka,

I see what you're saying........it depends on applications. that's not the overriding factor for me now, ease of use, stability from viruses/spyware/adware are more important for me.

also, now Macs can run a large amount of ported applications from UNIX open source projects

.....and to take steps further, you can now dual boot Windows AND Mac on a Mac PC w/ Apple's BootCamp software.
with Parallels software, you can even run Windows on a virtual PC simultaneously with Windows.

with a desktop that's as nice-looking as Mac OS X, and with a FreeBSD foundation, the Mac appeals to me......especially now since I can run Windows if I ever need it.

I would say go for it if that's your thing. My whole rant was just about the business end and what I've observed, but as home system, Macs can hold their end. I've just seen few programmers who have Macs at home, well never really, not even for experimentation.

I guess I have to try it a bit more to enjoy it.

Good Night, its getting late here.
