The Somali Reconciliation Conference

Postby SummerRain » Sun Jul 22, 2007 6:56 pm

What do you think of it? Give us some of your inputs as to how to make it a successful event for all Somalis.I personally think the current one is a joke, in the sense that the only the warlords and money thristy individuals/groups are benefiting for it. I also think Xamar is a wrong venue to hold the event. It should be in a more neutral place outside of the country. Furthermore, the chairman of the conference should from a minority clan, NO hawiye, Darood or Isaaq.

Your thoughts.

Well, they held conferences and elections in Afghanistan and Iraq. The insurgency in those countries are getting stronger, bolder and brazen. The majority of Afghans and Iraqis view their TFG-ed governments as illegal, collaborator, puppet, incompetent, inefficient and corrupt. There's no hope and future in TFG-ed governments.

That is true bro, and the truth is Mogadisho is passed the mark of being labeled as Baghdad in the making. Its in fact is in similar circumstances as in Iraq. These people are being forced to accept a "gov't" that they didnt elect nor is capable to bring the peace and stability they so in dire need of. The mere fact that they appointed a criminal who puts on a business suit as a chairman of an event of such enormous importance is ridiculous.

People have to be realistic about what they want and what can be achieved, Somalia is full of shady people and everyone knows that. The 'warlords' like everybody also need to reconcile their differences and create economic ties with each other and foster interdependence.

Somali's in the west when they criticize Somali and even Africa, they have an unrealistic expectation. Even America hasn't completely gotten democracy right, so relax.

If every time their is an effort for reconciliation, someone or group isn't completely satisfied, they will ruin it for everyone and call it a joke. The people who benefit from Somali disunity(Somalilanders, Islamists) will always oppose any kind of reconciliation. At some point we have to say no to all of it and start reconciling. TFG is the best shot we have or we are back to square one.

All thats happening in this conference, is the dispersements of checks to all the participants. Also without sounding qabilste, AY doesn't really even have to negotiate with Hawiye, as their leaders (Qeybadid, M Dhere etc.), are already in the fold. The only "negotiation" that could take place is with Marehan, as they have something that AY wants by force. Confused , now as far as having a genuine reconciliation, the only successful conference, could take place with the intellectuals, elders, Sheikhs and societal leaders. No warlords, or criminals should be included. up
