Former T'wolves Forward Dies In SUV-Train Crash
(AP) HOUSTON Former Minnesota Timberwolves forward Eddie Griffin died last week when his sport utility vehicle collided with a freight train in a fiery crash, the Harris County medical examiner's office said Tuesday.

Investigators used dental records to identify Griffin, 25, who began his tumultuous pro career with the Houston Rockets in 2001. He was waived by the Timberwolves in March.

The five-year veteran, who was the No. 7 pick in the 2001 NBA draft, had battled alcohol problems since coming out of Seton Hall. Griffin was suspended by the league for five games in January for violating the anti-drug program.

Houston police said in a report that the driver of the SUV ignored a railroad warning and went through a barrier before striking the moving train about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The driver's body was badly burned and there was no identification.

Griffin had a series of suspensions, court dates and missed practices during his first two years in the NBA with Houston and New Jersey. He spent time in the Betty Ford Center for alcohol treatment in 2003-04.

Griffin, who played forward and center, signed with the Timberwolves as a free agent before the 2004 season. He showed enough promise as a shot-blocker and rebounder to be signed to an extension, but was waived in March after playing in just 13 games last season with the Wolves

Eddie Griffin died as the result of a car crash on August 17, 2007.[4] While driving alone in an SUV, Griffin struck a moving train and the vehicle burst into flames. At the time of the accident, local officials were unable to identify the body.[5] On August 21, 2007, however, the Harris County Medical Examiner confirmed his identity.[6]

On March 30, 2006, he was involved in a bizarre car crash. Witnesses and friends stated that he was watching a "porn movie on a DVD in his vehicle, and was masturbating".[2] After the accident, Griffin entered a nearby convenience store. The store's security camera recorded video of Griffin repeatedly saying he was drunk, that he didn't have a driver's license, and of him pleading with the man whose SUV he crashed into, offering to buy him a new car in exchange for not calling the police. Abdi Hussieneh, who is the brother of the victim, said Griffin told him, “That he was masturbating himself going down that street. That’s how the accident happened because he was not paying attention. He’s paying attention to that video and all of a sudden he’s shoveled somebody’s car on the top of the sidewalk.”
Police eventually did arrive, however, but allegedly did not require Griffin to submit to a breathalyser test or field sobriety test.

This guy had alot of potential coming up --but he had a troubled life. he drunk too much, he get into trouble --and he was bounce from team to team!

I wonder if he committed suicide from all those troubles he had--collidding with running train is just crazy!
