New York Refuses to Let Iran President Visit Ground Zero

WTF ??? Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

NEW YORK (AFP) - New York authorities on Wednesday rejected a request by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to visit Ground Zero next week, the site of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, police said.

"A request earlier this month to permit a visit by Iranian President Ahmadinejad to Ground Zero during the United Nations General Assembly was rejected," New York Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said in a statement.

The decision was made during a meeting that included NYPD (police), Secret Service and Port Authority officials, Browne said.

"The site is closed to visitors because of construction there," Browne said. "Requests for the Iranian president to visit the immediate area would also be opposed by the NYPD on security grounds."

The only reason bUsh denied the ground zero request was because it would look to be in poor taste to bomb the guys country just after he laid a wreath at a memorial. But he has accepted an invitation to speak at Columbia University Forum.

President Ahmadinejad of Iran has accepted an invitation to speak at Columbia University on Monday afternoon at a forum sponsored by the university's School of International and Public Affairs, a spokesman for the university said last night.

The Iranian Mission to the United Nations requested the invitation through a professor in the Middle East department, Richard Bulliet, who is a specialist on Iran.

Gillermann implores U.S. to prevent Ahmadinejad visit to UN

Source: Haaretz

Israeli UN Ambassador Dan Gillerman has urged the U.S. administration to deny the participation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the opening session of the United Nations 62nd General Assembly next week in New York City.

"It is the obligation of the American legal authorities to prevent his entrance into the United States and if he does enter, to arrest him and try him for incitement to genocide and aiding and abetting terrorists who kill American soldiers in Iraq," Gillerman told Haaretz Wednesday.

Gillerman also protested to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon over Ahmadinejad's plan to attend the session.

The Iranian president is to address the General Assembly on September 25, the first day of the general debate, which is to be opened by President George W. Bush.

Given past experience, I would have expected him to point at ground zero and ask what all the fuss was about. There's no mess there now.......

Iran mourned and denounced 9/11 attacks before bUsh referred to them as "the axis of evil".

-----------------------------------------------

Sept. 11, 2001 - Iran denounces massive attacks on U.S., expresses sympathy with victims:

Tehran, Sept 11, IRNA -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Tuesday
condemned the kamikaze "terrorist" attacks in the United States and
expressed his deep sorrow and sympathy with the American nation.

"On behalf of the Iranian government and the nation, I condemn the
hijacking attempts and terrorist attacks on public centers in American
cities which have killed a large number of innocent people," President
Khatami said in reaction to the worst attack on American soil since
Pearl Harbor. Three hijacked planes slammed into the Pentagon and New
York's landmark World Trade Center on Tuesday, demolishing the two
110-story towers that symbolize U.S. financial might.

"My deep sympathy goes out to the American nation, particularly
those who have suffered from the attacks and also the families of the
victims," he said, noting, "terrorism is doomed and the international
community should stem it and take effective measures in a bid to
eradicate it."

Khatami added that the Islamic Republic is treading a road to
uproot terrorism and to this end, he noted, it will spare no efforts.

Jr,

Ahmadinejad is hardly Khatami.

I was thinking of the Holocaust denial contest, among other things.

Grant,

Same argument can be made that Americans in general don't share the same foreign policy bozo bUsh is espousing, and that America is not evil.

Iranian leader to address top New York university
1 hour, 56 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AFP) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to address one of New York's top universities during a visit to the city for the United Nations General Assembly next week, the university said.

Ahmadinejad, who is due to arrive in New York early next week, would take part in the debate at Columbia on Monday, university president Lee Bollinger said, justifying the decision to invite the president.

"Columbia, as a community dedicated to learning and scholarship, is committed to confronting ideas," he said in a statement.

Bollinger said he would introduce the event by challenging Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust, his calls for the destruction of Israel and any ambitions Tehran has to acquire a nuclear weapons capability.

In fulfilling its mission as a place of learning, Bollinger said, the university would on occasion encounter "beliefs many, most or even all of us will find offensive and even odious."

"We trust our community, including our students, to be fully capable of dealing with these occasions, through the powers of dialogue and reason."

"I would also like to invoke a major theme in the development of freedom of speech as a central value in our society," he said.

New York authorities on Wednesday rejected a request by Ahmadinejad to tour Ground Zero, the site of the September 11 attacks, on security grounds.

The proposed visit had led to outspoken criticism from politicians who consider Iran a state sponsor of terrorism.

why would Israeli ambasaor want to deny the participation of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the opening session of the United Nations 62nd General Assembly next week in New York City?

because Isreal don't want to hear what Americans and others would have to say about America and Israel.
