Mehri language

Postby Somaliweyn Commando » Fri Oct 19, 2007 12:29 pm

Mehri or Mahri is a Semitic language spoken by minority populations in the eastern part of Yemen and western Oman and is a remnant of the ancient indigenous language group spoken in the southern Arabian Peninsula before the spread of Arabic along with the Islamic religion in the 7th century AD. It is also spoken today in Kuwait by guest workers originally from these areas. Given the dominance of the Arabic language in the region and bilingualism with Arabic among Mehri speakers, Mehri is at risk of extinction. It is primarily a spoken language with little existing in print and almost no literacy in the written form among native speakers.

Spoken in:
Yemen, Oman, Kuwait

Region:
Arabian Peninsula

Total speakers:
135,000 Laughing

Language family:
Afro-Asiatic

Semitic

South Semitic

South East Semitic

Linguistically, it is classified as a South Arabian language within the South Semitic language group, akin to Semitic languages such as Amharic in Ethiopia, which are all part of the larger Semitic language family, which in turn is part of the overarching Afro-Asiatic language family. Mehri has 70,643 speakers in Yemen, 50,763 in Oman and 14,358 in Kuwait. Population total for all countries is 135,764 (SIL estimate, 2000). Mehri speakers are known in the region as the Mahra people.

That's because Carabta Maxamuud Saalax were originally a Midgaan group like Madhibaan and Muuse Dheriye but the became wealthy and brought status and they changed their geneology and origins.

Carabta Maxamuud Saalax are related to Yaxye Saalax who are still to this day are considared to be Yaxar.

Their story is similar to that of Gaalgale. If any of you have seen them they look notthing like Arab. I personally have been told by alot of elders (people over 90) that no one use to marry them when they were young.

Meheri is one of the largest tribes inhabiting the Al Mahrah Governorate in Yemen, parts of Somalia, and other Arabian countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arab and Kuwait.

Meheri people who inhabit Somalia are mainly of the Bin Neebir sub-clan (Mohamud Salah, Hassan Salah, Omar Musse and others ), Bin Mashowle (Reer Cali Siciid, Reer Canshuur) and Bin Bixdi (Reer Cawad, Reer Taabid). The Meheris are resourceful merchants who took lions share in finding and establishing most of urban Somali communities (cities & towns) and overall advancement of Somali civilization.

It is well known fact that prominent Meheri business people reside in the centre of town and cities of Somalia from coast to coast. Their contribution to the country is of immense proportions comparing to size of this noble community. The Meheri are part of Al Bu Muhair tribe which itself part of Bani Yas
