In 1903, newspapers had to print sensational stories to sell their papers. There was a lack of intellectual revolution, thus most readers believed whatever they read. In addition, there were no institutions to oversee the credibility or accuracy of what newspapers printed.

Did anyone notice it was a London byline, or that the the information was picked up from deserters?

Food was scarce in Germany during the first world war, so horses killed in the fighting were routinely processed for the table. The British media reported this, but left the German word for carcass in German: "Kadaver", and did not specify it was horse carcasses they were talking about. Laughing
