Egypt Seeks Nuclear Power

Postby Gedo_Boy » Mon Oct 29, 2007 3:26 pm

Probably the only Arab country w/ the # of skilled workers/scientists to even realistically think about nuclear energy.

From that same article:

"The United States said it would offer its co-operation in the project."

a bomb and nuclear power are totally different.

The US is probably willing to help because it will have full, unfettered access to the power plants.....that's something Iran isn't prepared to do.

The Saudis will probably outsource the whole thing to foreign firms.

That's why the US is concerned about Iran and not Egypt. An Egyptian or Saudi program will be under their thumb.

Egypt has had nuclear research facility since 1960’s. Their Soviet-supplied research reactor started in 1961 and runs only ten-percent-enriched uranium fuel. The reactor was shut down for renovation during the 1980s, but started up again in 1990; it’s very old and needs lots of repair.

Gedo_Boy,

Nuclear power is phenomenally expensive way of generating electricity. Instead of throwing more money at a new nuclear power station they should put more money into the development of renewable energy sources such as wind, wave and tidal power while promoting energy efficiency.

*jr,

I think it's a prestige issue for a lot of people, considering the immense expertise and industrial capability it requires.....it's like a status symbol.
