''that is the day we move forward. blame the tribal culture. lamagodley somali culture.''
Excellent analysis Musikaman. I would say it is the pastoral way of life..which created a peculiar culture, political structures, and social environment that has kept Somalis locked in a timeless zone for hunderd years. Just think about it, Somalia was not destroyed during the 30 years of state existence, Somalis were already doing bad way before 1960 since our lands were occupied by European powers, and by the Abbysinians. How could this happen? Again the pastoral culture of division, which prevented all Somali groups to join hands in resisting the foreign powers bent on occupying Somali lands and oppressing Somali people. One could reason further and look at the wider global picture by saying: The reason why European powers could colonize non-european lands was because European people were progressing while the colonized lands were degenerating into backwardness and in this way isolated from the technological, militariy, political and social breakthroughs in Europe. But thats not relevant for this topic.
In Somalia, the pastoral culture of division has killed us from the inside while danger was approaching from the outside.
For example, how could the weak Italians (no offence though) occupy Somali lands and subjugate Somali people, while we outnumbered and outgunned them?
Read this following excerpt from the book Italian Colonialism:
''De Vecchi estimated that Somali tribesmen had in their possession more than sixteen thousand rifles, or six times as many as those assigned to the local defense forces''
Thus Somalis had 6 times more rifles then the Italians. The only way Italians could have occupied Southern Somalia was by dividing the people, and taking care one group at the time.
Again, the current situation is the same as then. We outnumber and outgun the 30.000 Ethiopians, Somalis are known fierless fighters relative to the other peoples in the Horn...yet these weak Ethiopians are keeping us down.

Anyways,
What DS said is the best alternative for now. You can not squabble about the past and in this way divide the Somali people while our very future is in jeopardy (Ethiopian sattelite-state).
Thus forget it for now, and focus on the future. When we reach a certain intellectual level can we debate about the causes of the Somali backwardness and the ensuing destruction of the first Somali nation-state.
