Xalay

Postby kambuli » Fri Jan 04, 2008 11:10 am

Sheeko uu nooga sheekeeyey Awowgey wallee indhihii ayaa ilmo naga timid:

Wuxuu yidhi" Waagi hore ee Waqooyiga Ingririisku gumeysan jirey, shaaha makhaayadaha marka laga iibsanayo, waxaa lagu shubi jirey koobka, kolkaasaa la buux dhaafin jirey ilaa u ku daato seesarka ka hooseeya. (Xamar waxaa laga dhahaa Hoobis). Qofku markaasuu marka hore cabbi jirey shaaha seesarka ku daatay..deedna ka koobka.

Berigii Talyaanigu yimid, ayaa sonkortii India laga keeni jirey la waayey. Markaasaa shaahii lagu shubey koobkii keli ah oo weliba aan aad loo buuxin.

Nin baa loo keeney koob half ah oo seesar saaran..

Kolkaasuu intuu xanaaqay yidhi"

"Gaw, bal gartayoo koobka waa la soo hafroo waxoogaabaa lagusoo shubee, maxay kasoo lugooyeen seesarka"!!!

Okay shankaroon let me try my best walashiis!
tea is served in a cup set on a saucer , okaaay??
seesar in somali=saucer in english ...okay?
So.. back in the day when tea was served the person pouring the tea would deliberatly fill the cup till some would spill over onto the saucer .<-- a symbolic sign of abundance and generosity to the skinny mind but also on a more practical note , the liquid on the saucer would cool off faster which then would permit the client to get a quicker taste of it , then would request more sugar or milk if needed, okay?
Now after the Italian attacked and conquered the British somaliland in WW2, the supply of sugar coming from India was cut short , prompting sugar to be rationed and tea served only half the volume in a cup ...okay?
So now when the guy was given a 1/5 cup of tea on a saucer, he went" why did he even bother bringing a saucer with this little bit of tea in the cup?"
get it now??

Shankra, quote " seesarka, Hoobis, deedna ka koobka, Gaw, hafroo waxoogaabaa.

1. Seesarka = Saucer
2. Hoobis = Overfill, when you pour more than the cup take and it spills on the saucer or whatever is under the container that you are pouring the liquid.
3. Deedna = Then
4. Koobka = Cup
5. Gaw.or Naw.How do I explain this expression? ..it is like...Hayay!!
6. Hafroo= When you accuse...But in this sense I think this is not the right word...I don'r remember the right word really...But In Somali marka aad been ka sheegto runta..In this case the cup was half full...
7. Waxoogaaba = Little bit

Xaseey,

You didn't answer my question walaal. Do you know me and my awow?

The sugar rationing is what caused the tradition saying girls can't drink shaah..

Some ultra traditional somalilander families still think unmarried girls should not drink tea LOL

even though sugar is plentiful now
