The Biafra War: Africa's Post Independence Secession

Postby AbdiWahab252 » Sun Jan 20, 2008 8:00 pm

The Biafran war was the most bloody and first organized secessionist war in Post colonial Africa. In the end, the Nigerian Federal Govt crushed the Biafran secessionists but the struggles between the former Biafrans and the Nigerian government continues.

You have to hand it to the Biafrans who were organized well: airforce, currency, government etc.

GeneralSNM,

There are no parallels.

SNM was the only group fighting against the Govt. of Somalia in Northern Somalia. SNM did not fight for independence but for the overthrow of the Barre regime.

I will check out that book saxib.

Assalaamu Alaikum,

They're not similar at all. Biafra got recognition by some states, Somaliland has not. Biafra is no more, Somaliland is here for the foreseable future.

I never said SNM i said somaliland.SNM's goals have been distorted to the extent that if they were alive today they would be anti-somaliland.
In nigeria you have three major tribes husa yoroba and igbu same with somalia. In nigeria the british played divide and conquer same with somali. In Nigeria one tribe wanted its own independent state purely for its tribe the igbu, same with as isaaq in somali.
There are lot more similarities you see.

Assalaamu Alaikum,

Dr. Lets look at the score card. Somaliland exists, Biafra is no more. Somiland has defacto recognition, Biafra had none. Having dejure recognition when you do not have defacto recognition is putting the cart before the horse. Case in point, Somalia Proper. Somalia Proper has dejure recognition but not defacto. Somalia Proper's so called government is recognized internationally, but it has no control. Legitimacy comes from within not from without. Chew on that while you manufacture more doctorates.
