How much do you owe? Do you think it is good idea to pay off your under grad loans prior to completing your grad studies.

I am about to my neck with student loans. unless I get a decent job, I shudder at the thought of facing such onerous debts. Perhaps I should migrate. how can one pay off the debt before one finish his/her studies?

Lord Diplock;
I have seen many people who have completed their under grad education and then worked hard and paid it off and then wen on to grad schools. I just completed my first year of grad school and I am thinking about stopping school and at least try to pay half of my loans before I complete my grad education.

Cabdallah;
Can you share with us how you were able to complete 6 years of education without student loans? Even with some scholarships, I am loaded Saaxiib and the thought of it just eats me alive.
Lord Diplock;
Aren't you in the States? The jobs are plenty in here if you have a degree. I am talking about professional jobs that require some sort of formal education.

guhad,this is your choice

1) get a job that pays your grad school, and pay off your undergrad loans

2) get more loans finish quick and pay them about 7 to 10 years

if i were u i will go with choice one

Guhad,

I assume that your loans are deferred while u are in grad school. Quitting school to pay them off gets rid of your deferment & you also run the risk of not going back.

My advice:

1. Stay in grad school and finish it up while still maintaining your deferment.

2. Explore getting a teaching assistant position which sometimes gives u free tuition and fees.

3. Consolidate your debt upon graduation - You may not want to do it now because I believe you can only consolidate the same loans once.

4. Search for scholarships/grants.

5. Cut costs by for example getting a roommate, getting a job as a Residence Hall Administrator (free board).

I was able to consolidate my loans at about 2.5% upon graduating from grad school

Gatspy,

When I graduated from my undergrad, I paid 80% of my loans in 2 years by living at home, and avoided buying a new car
