CoHabitation On the Rise Among Somalis

Postby AbdiWahab252 » Fri Feb 08, 2008 11:30 am

I am beginning to see an increase of Somali couples living together before marriage. What are the advantages or disadvantages to this ?

As long as there is nikaax it is ok.... I know few couples who decided to live together before their wedding...But they were engaged(nikaax) legaly...

Sometimes we mix up with a custom and a religion....Religiously your wife becomes Xalaal for you the date she is engaged to you....

Kambuli,

Does a woman/man have to mention if they have ever had another nikaax if they divorce each other and are going to marry someone else ?

Shirib,

I know walaal...But remember in our culture even though the nikaax is done, men were not allowed to to touch their wife before the Wedding(Celebration)...And it so happened that some men may go to Zinna even though they had a Xalal wife sitting somewhere waiting for the La la la and stuff!

Satarscream quote " forreal? because what if u decide not to go through with the wedding and got her pregnant and everything? we will get jamaican situations sister."

Religiously walaal, she is your wife as soon as the Nikaax takes place...
But in order to avoid situation you just described, that is why most of the time the wedding is done right after the nikaax...Usually within the same week..

A/W,

I believe you have to declare that you had a previous nikaax before proceeding with a new one...
