Google Earth is semi-conclusive. It doesn't explain population since Hobyo has a population of around 40,000 but the city has like 30 houses. It means that the majority of people live outside of the city, in villages that are secluded.
Google Earth just gives us a taste of what the cities LOOK LIKE. For example, the urban area of Bosaso is more extensive than Kismayo, but Kismayo has a population of 170k and Bosaso has only 160k. We all know the towns and villages outside of Kismayo like Bulo Gudud and Bulo Xaji make up for most of the population in the area but Bosaso has a higher percentage of its population living within the city limits since its not very wise to live in the middle of the desert. That explains most of the population questions.
Its like this -- The Twin Cities of Minnesota have a total pop. of 700,000, but the metro area has a pop. of 3.1 Million including all the surrounding suburbs.
No city in Somalia, aside from Xamar, has an urban population above 30%. Most people are nomads and live outside the city in remote villages and huts scattered across the landscape.
