China is a good 5-10 years behind the USA in terms of military technology. But it has the economic momentum to narrow the gap or even surpass the America within the next two decades depending on how the Afghanistan problem resolves. Right now it is the fourth most powerful military after Russia and NATO.

I have my doubts. On the surface Afghanistan looks like a great example of global effort against terrorism, but once you scratch the surface a little harder, what you will see is a very disturbing case of international spy operations targeting some specific countries. People think that the Americans are after the Taliban and their Al qaida allies, the truth is that America is using some shadowy characters and militants to target their allies like China and Pakistan. The Indians too are active in Afghanistan with the support of the Karzai government. Soon after 9/11 and the ensuing fall of the Taliban regime, India was quick to open its embassies and consulates all over Afghanistan specifically those close to the Pakistani border regime especially Kandhar and Jalalabad, which they continue to use as a hub to supply, arm and train anti-State elements in Pakistan. The Pakistanis too have complained about Indian activities on its Western border, it is interesting to note that a bomb blast that targeted a Pakistani intelligence office in Southern Pakistan was traced to Bagram Air Base and when the chief of Pakistani intelligence service confronted Gen Tommy Frank, the Americans were simply caught with their pants down. The Americans were found to be arming the Balochistan Peoples' Liberation Army which wants a separate homeland for the Baloch people in Iran, and Pakistan. Interesting, the Baloch people in Afghanistan too but the BLA doesn't want any of Afghanistan! In 2006 the BLA was destroyed ( about 80%) and had their leader and top leadership killed.

The recent assassination of Benazir Bhutto was traced to a guy who goes by the name of Abdullah Mehsud. Incidentally, Mehsud was arrested in Afghanistan and spent years in GITMO under American control and after he was realized, instead of joining the Taliban, he formed his own militia ( with God knows where he got the money and support) and started targeting the Chinese people in Pakistan working in strategic partnership in Pakistan such as the constructions of the Dams, Roads and above all the Gwadar port in Southern Pakistan that is designed to give the Chinese Navy a foothold in the Persian Gulf. The Americans have always made it clear that they will not tolerate Chinese presence in the Persian Gulf and the fact that America plans to stabilize Afghanistan and help the BLA annex Southern Pakistan and turn it into a hub whereby the Huge Oil and Natural Gas of Central Asia can be transported into the Arabian Sea doesn't sit well with the Chinese and certainly with the Pakistanis. There alot of reports of Chinese and Russian assistance to the Taliban lately and that should not surprise any-one. Russia is starting to regain its lost glory and sees the Central Asian republics as its own backyard, the Chinese too want to secure their routes of their energy flow such as the Malaca straits, the Persian Gulf through Gawadar ( where they have spent 10s of billions of USD in the last 5 years) and even the Horn of Africa region.

That's why I said that whatever happens in Afghanistan will determine the fate of the Chinese empire.

my 2 cents worth

Those Indhoyars are dangerous. They'll surpass America because of their market size continuing to dominate the new global economy. India is right after them.

I agree. The future is bright for them but you never know what happens down the road. No-one would have thought the ruskies would collapse so soon.

Twisted,

Thanks for the wlc bro. Russias also witnessing a great resurgance as Putin has done a wonderful job in his terms in office and has them headed in the right direction. Those Indians are cornering the market on skilled labor, Chinas dominating economically and Europe has the EU and the best the US can come up with is Nafta. The US under the neocons is headed down the tubes.

The Russians are starting to reassert their position on the international stage and are threatening to flex their muscles every-now and then. They have restated their bomber patrols and have come dangerously close to American and British air spaces recently. The Chinese economy and military technology is increasing at a phenomenal pace. We are talking about China fielding systems comparable to the F-22s by 2015 and check this out, not one but 3 different systems designed to rival the F-22. They have already proved that they have the capability to shoot down satellites. The Indians are little bit interesting in the sense that they are being used primarily as tool to contain the Chinese advance while the West is busy with the global war on terror. They are hell-bent on starting an arms race and regional tension between the two countries, but the Chinese have used Pakistan as a means to keep India busy so that they have more time to worry about the West. It is interesting that the Chinese have a philosophy of " don't piss with the puppies, if you wanna compete with the top-dogs," so a strong and powerful Pakistan is seen by the Chinese as a good investment. The latest bombings in Pakistan by shadowy non-state actors is seen as a method to pin down Pakistan and create a sort of quagmire so that it doesn't compete with India. As of now, neither the Chinese or the Russians can challenge the West militarily or economically. They will continue to rely on diplomatic disagreements as means to voice their position.

We live in an interesting times, but one we should remember that whatever happens in Afghanistan within the next decade has the potential to influence the course of human history.
