How American are you if you are American ? Do you celebrate their holidays ? Do you refer to the US as our country ?
I find it easier if you fit in and conform with the American culture with the exceptions of drinking & all other things haram.
Never understood why certain folks would get upset if you celebrate Thanksgiving or Memorial Day ?

Pretty American. I like to go to the gym, do outdoor activities, watch football, basketball, baseball etc. but to be engrained in the American community is tough. They looove alcohol and if You don't drink You don't fit in in America.

Murax,
I might invite you over for the Annual Africa Soccer Cup & BBQ. Last year, East Africa (Somalis, Kenyans, Ugandans and Tanzanians) whooped arse (thanks to a late goal by your very own AW) over the Arrogant West Africa.

abdi,
you celebrate Thanksgiving Day? i mean in legit... and not for its commercial aspect?
You know...Thanksgiving Day was created with the foundations of prayer and thanking God...So which God are you gonna thank?? If your answer is Allah, then you are in direct contrast (perhaps insulting to its founders) with the traditions of this very American ritual. With that in mind, I think Muslims celebrating Thanksgiving Day in America is about as much "assimilation" as Christians observing Ramadan in Mecca and breaking fast with wine.
So unless you're up for, "When in Rome Do as The Romans", don't bother with integration with respect to social customs.
I can almost picture you at a Thanksgiving Day dinner party with fellow Americans and when they all join hands to make prayer.....yours would be in secret. LOL.

Most Definitely American. This is the only country I have ever known. But I thank Allah I'm a Muslim...... a lot of ish is too superficial to be around and there isn't any point.
Thanksgiving isnt anything more than just an excuse to have a Turkey....I love Turkey though

I personally wouldnt celebrate gaalo holidays. Its great to have a day off from work though!
I celebrate birthdays and....well thats about it really....mothers' day is everyday in my home
Some people wouldnt like to see you celebrate say thanksgivine (AW252) because its like your trading your old haritage for the new one. Many beleive that you cant have two cultures to call your own. Its an either/or situation if you will!

Zulaika,
they can't pronounce my government name so I go by the nickname of "Aabe"
Ms Nalia,
I agree. I enjoy certain American customs and ideas. I take the best of all the cultures I have lived in: Somali, Swahili, American
PinkBunny,
Europe is a mess. America with its problems gives its minorities a better chance for success
