Noone of ma family members eats or tried to chew them twigs. Jaad chewers in my neck of the wood are called qoodadis (magac xun) but todate am yet to meeet a sheikh that has proven beyond doubt with suffient daliil that these green leaves that most wadads love to hate is haram!

Anything that's harmful, addictive, money consuming is haraam. In addition, anything that causes hallucegenic reaction is haraam; from what I recall reading it falls under the same categoey as Qamr.

Khat has the same chemical substances as amphetamine, an active brain stimulant. In the U.S. the FDA did a chemical analysis of Khat a few years ago & after it was discovered to share many similarities with other banned substances, Khat was also banned. You should read this article:
