I'm an ethnic Somali and I say it is not common. It is exaggerated by the United Nations who inflate numbers to make their point that AFrica is barabaric. Get your head out of your ass, you colonoized Uncle Tom.

As well, I read somewhere that it happens in Kurdistan. Yet, these Iraqis are covering up b/c they don't want the media to think they're barbaric however its perfectly fine to portray Africa as backwards afterall its the world's garbage dump.

  Kurdistan..ive heard of the Egyptian Christians and Muslims and Ethiopians, Yemenis, and other africans doing it..but never Kurdistan..

We all know this tradition to get girls circumsised/mutilated predates Islam..but those ahadeeth that have been attributed to our Prophet (p) are perpetuating it ..the truth of the matter is Prophet Muhammed never encouraged it and certainly none of his wives or his daughter were circumsised..so how can it be 'sunnah'..its a total myth. :?

People in Kurdistan didn't want the media to know their secrets. Unlike AFricans, who are open about their issues. Arabs cover up their bad habits.

[quote="QansaGabeyle"]You know what is strange, western women are performing a new procedure on themselves that is very similar to what they call FGM. According to them the vagina will look better if this procedure is performed on them. lol They are removing the labia and everything.....ok not everything but everything other than the kinter. lol I believe the western will soon be performing fircooni circumcision on their daughters and call it a different name while crying foul about the non-western people who do it.

loool Qansa, you're right!

Even in that link, it says:

"In fact, by strict definition cosmetic female genital surgery is female genital mutilation, which is defined as "a range of practices involving the complete or partial removal or alteration of the external genitalia for nonmedical reasons.""

And they are doing it for precisely some of the same reasons this was done in ancient cultures.

truly a forum fool of idiots the so called cosmetic procedure is done to tighten the vagina due to delivery of babies when doctor's cut it half way to enlarge the opening or due to the stretchness caused by loose skin. It's NOT the same as the FGM performed in somalia by stiching up the hole chopping off the clitorious with a razor that is not sharped. Go get's your facts straight before posting typing from your arses

To even put these two in the same categories shows the support in this day an age and ignorancy that somalis still have in the year 2008..

and for snowflake to say that other culture are better then us because they hide it  SO you rather we hide our barbaric way and let thousands of young girls suffer for generation to come???

unbelivable

Not precisely. They're doing it in order to improve their sex lives ( for extreme liberal reasons) and in the ancient times it was done in order to limit a female's sex drive ( for extreme conservative reasons) So the practice is approached from two completely opposing angles.

Yeah every porn star does it because they had babies right. Freakin 18 year old girls that never had babies are doing it idiot. It is entirely for cosmetic reasons as the name suggests it.

Firefly, how do you know for what reason they have done it in the ancient times?

This practice had died a death I believe especially in the west many countries have legislated against it.In the UK it used to be normal for girls to be sent back home for this procedure even 10 years ago but it but now you can be prosecuted for going back to do this...even in Somaliland/Somali it is dying a slow death.

Here in the UK there is a specialist clinic at a London hospital where they 'open' somali girls, some of my friends had to go there when they married...

UK

Firefly,

Limiting a woman's sexuality wasn't the only reason. There were at least 2 others:

1. The look of the vagina was considered unsightly. They must have thought a nip 'n tuck would make it look better.
2. Keeps the vagina firm, intact.

Those are at least 2 reasons they did it in ancient times and why they're doing it now.

The main reason for the practice was to curb female promiscuity. Your second point supports this. Why do they care about how it looks like? Such illogical thinking. Like you say, I don't doubt that there other reasons - but none of those reasons justify the physical/ psychological & emotional torture those women had to endure.

Are there any men who actually prefer their wife to have their genitals mutilated? That's gross.
