Those are at least 2 reasons they did it in ancient times and why they're doing it now.
The main reason for the practice was to curb female promiscuity. Your second point supports this. Why do they care about how it looks like? Such illogical thinking. Like you say, I don't doubt that there other reasons - but none of those reasons justify the physical/ psychological & emotional torture those women had to endure.
