Some of us were alive at that time. And even though, those picture are from Somalia, I am not sure if they are at 1966.
1. Colour pictures at that time were rare.
2. Housing structure in Somalia 1966 were not as you are showing in your picture
3. Clothing those women are wearing were in late 70s to 80s

I could be wrong, but I think those pictures were taken around mid 80s.

I could be wrong, but I think those pictures were taken around mid 80s.

Except for the shot that includes me, I personally shot that film in 1966. The clothing style was ubiquitous in the South, but had not yet reached Woqooyi, which was still wearing monchromatic (once white) godley. In 1966, there were rectangular arishes in the towns and round ones in the smaller villages. The nearest stone buildings were in Kismayu and Baraawe.
Those were the only three structures I saw. Never did see an aqal in the South.

Historically, slavery was associated with animism and the animistic beliefs of the Bantu peoples was an excuse for enslaving them. The Islamic word kafir (infidel) was applied to them. some of them have fully assimilated into the somali way of life

others still strongly retain their past origins

Jilib when I was there was racially mixed and fairly well integrated. The town had been the Italian administrative center for the Lower Juba. I am sure there was discrimination, but it was pretty low key.

The mayor was Gosha. The surrounding area and possibly a third of the town was Gosha.
The District Commissioner was from the North.
There were several Barwaane families with shops and I think one Ajnabi.
Nearly all the government officials and employees were from southern tribes. Those I knew were Hawiye, Barwaani and Cumar Mahamoud.
There were still some Italians in the area, a doctor and some nuns associated with the Leprosarium across the river.

Only the children of government employees went to the Government school, and all of them happened to be Samaales. The few Gosha who were in school attended the Egyptian school with some Samaale children whose parents did not work for the government.

I can only speak for the period 1966-67. For that period, Fah and Alluring, you are wrong.
