whats the difference between IELTS and TOEFL?

salam alaikum

i have to provide the evidence of my current english proficiency and this means that poor naaima have to take an IELTS or TOEFL test ..an entry requirement before i can take an english programme. at university of leicester :cry:

..so somalis do you know what is the difference between the two? which is easier to pass IELTS or TOEFL?..and why did you say that IELTS/TOEFL is easier to pass?

I used to take practice tests of TOEFL back iin 1998 but never took it. It is quite simple. It has four sections, reading, grammer, listening, and writing.

However, I will recommend that you take IELTs, its Academic version, which enhances your chances of enrolling in higher institutions of learning like Oxford, Stanford, UCs or whatever.

IELTS must be european/uk, I've only heard of TOEFL.

from your level of english i think you should be able to pass it.

i am assuming you did your high school in an EU country in a langauge other than english right?

when are you going to liecester sept? you must tell me how the uni is.

I did my post graduate diploma in management online from there and i am considering
finishing the MBA there next year...

so gurey might end up there or maybe Warwick.

Aamina, give at least one year of preparation because these tests want a higher scoring mark. Better prepare yourself and take your time.

I don't know if you can take it as many times as you want but the High Score is the Key to obtaining admission.

TOEFL is normally taken by international students in america. Sometimes you take it in your country but still you can take it in UK too. TOEFL is more Secondary school level Maths, reading and Writing. It is similar to the placement tests that is offered in america. If you are confident in basic maths(add, subtr, multi) and can answer extract some questions from a passage, then go for it. If you can't you best bet is take some more ESL classes first.

seriously i still dont understand why international students have to pass these test? our english skills are very poor...

am wishing to improve my english buti can already underline that my english standard/skills is very bad and this means that naaima cant revive to the requirement that are relevant to the inquiry

IELTS is more difficult, expensive and marketable to unis than TOEFL.

I had to do IELTS when I wanted to attend University in the UK. As you know I lived in Sweden before. It is really easy and you shouldn't have any difficulties whatsoever. Do IELTS and make sure you book your test ASAP so that you get the results before enrollment. Good luck
