eating out..and halal foods

Postby zulaika » Mon Jul 07, 2008 1:21 pm

i always eat at halal restaurants and i make sure the seal of halal certificate is displayed on the window. but what about those who claim to eat halal only and eat "vegetarian" dishes or any other dish so long as its not pork at places that also serve pork khamri etc.? isn't halal also about the preparation and not just simply about the content alone? like if a place serves pork, they are likely to use the same utensils, countertops to prepare everything they serve, thus cross-contaminating the foods.

even though i keep a strict halal diet, i wasn't always so, i used to think, its ok to eat permissible foods prepared by gaalos(people of the book) until i realized they are indiscriminately preparing their foods on the same counter, using the same knives to cut etc. so i completely stopped.

thank God I live in T.dot where there are more halal restaurants of every ethnic foods as one can imagine.

Yeah in London thats not a problem. I honestly beleive theres more halal restaurants than not. Even some subways owned by muslims are halal.

When i went to the states, the had the attitude that as long as it wasnt pork then its all good.

As bad as it sounds...normally, I dont think about if the place has hallal meat or not. But one my best friends, ONLY eats hallal food so going out with him is always a hurdle at which point, I just let him pick the venue because I dont want him to ask for the salad and starve...lol
I dont think I've become more conscious eating out...
but buying food from the grocery store/meat market tho I am very cautious and since I cook more than I eat out....I guess its a good place 2 start.

MS NAlia,

everything in the Qurbaha is haram if you look hard enough.

I just avoid the obvious stuff: alcohol, swine, hunted meat etc

In 1987 we were in Leego and I saw people selling and buying sagaaro, but I never had the opprotunity to eat one..... Insha'allah I will try one when I go back to Somali near future.
