shaashsaar= where the girl puts some type of bowl on her head and people bring gifts and put it on there. They do little buraanbur etc.

With xeedho: It's about opening xeedhoyin which symbolizes the girl's virginity. The xeedhoyin is brought by the pride's family and The family of the groom attempts to open it. Whereby everyone close to opening it gets hit on the hand by a stick(this symbolizes the struggle of first night  ).

Anyone who attempts to open it and doesnt, gets a 'xujo'. He/she is asked a qeustion to answer or told to express or recite a peom.

Over all it's pretty fun festival and I like it.

In my wedding, we had both since my wife is a southerner.

ps. At the end the xeedhoyin must returned to the familes with money or some form expensive material inside of 'em. If returned empty, they could bring a shame to the family. All some kind of fairytale culture.

You had both??

The most anticipatory moment of the whole thing is when you finally open the thing up and you find lugmaad inside of it.  It's funny how outlandish the questions that are asked are..they can ask you to do anything for God's sake..!!

I've never been to a shaashar..but I hear that it is pretty entertaining too..women sing, dance and jump around.. :D

What did you marry into? I am just curious wallahi. So many northern dudes are marrying from gibil cads to abgaals these days.

Shaarshaar is basically all married women who are respectful and have good manners aya gambo sarayaan the newlywed girl, and this comes from the old tradition of the somalis who back in the day did not wear any head covering until they got married; jahilliya if you ask me. And today it just symbolizes her becoming a women, and its done markey todobada dhameysato. None of these stuff are religious stuff, waxey ka yimaadeen jahilnimo!

for you northerners..how would your family feel if the xeeroyin are returned to the brides family!

He married into Xawaadle.

Its not big deal, I got plenty of cousins who are Issaq. Inter-marriage been going on for a long while between North and South, I'm product of it anyway also.
