What are you talking about, this IS development. A land route with rail will dramatically increase the trade opportunities for both Djibouti, Yemen, and all of their neighbors, including Somalia and Somaliland.

It's much cheaper to ship items through cargo vessels, what is the use of this billion dollar bridge?

Arabs just like to win ''the biggest'' contest in everything.

Like the ridiculous artificial palm islands, the world island project, a ski track in the dessert, the most expansive hotel in the world, the tallest building in the world, the biggest mall and what not. And now they can say we build the longest bridge in the world.

It's not cheaper. Sea transport is more expensive than shipping by truck, and rail transport is cheapest of all.

A ship can transport tones, the biggest truck can only carry like 3 containers, a cargo vessel can carry hundreds of containers.

Only for short distance, like between Yemen and Djibouti it's profitable.

But if they want to use this for trade between Djibouti and the UAE, Oman and some parts of Saudi Arabia it's a big waste of money.

Cargo ships are slow, and can only ship a limited amount of goods, and it's not as cheap as though think it is, especially nowadays.
Trucks have an even more limited capacity, it's true, however there are thousands of trucks for every ship and they are fast. Plus, trucks can carry small amounts of goods, which is infeasible with cargo ships.
Trains can carry more goods than even the largest cargo ships, they are as fast as trucks and cheap as dirt. Even with the wide array of transportation options available to businesses in North America for instance, trains are the favored option for freight.

Plus, this does not replace the cargo ships, but adds to it, doubling or tripling the goods transport infrastructure for the horn.

With oil prices reaching 200$ per barrel soon, I doubt poor Djibouti or dirt poor Yemen can afford the fuel cost for thousands of trucks.

Sea transport is and will always be less costly than transport over land and environmentally friendlier.

This wasn't just meant for Djbouti and Yemen but meant to link to continents.

Any estimates on When this project is to be completed?

Nigerians, Angolans, Tanzanians etc would rather use sea transport then travel all over Africa to Djibouti (which is a problem by itself as Africa has closed borders and no economic unions).

Cost of the bridge is between 20 and 30 BILLION USD! And they will also plan to build two cities on each side of the bridge which will cost 200 BILLION!

With 230 billion you could transform both Yemen and Djibouti into developed nations with sustainable economies. But they waste it on a stupid bridge and two new cities, What a waste of money

Perhaps there thinking the best and fastest way to achieve such is by building this bridge. Besides with that kind of money being put into nation devlopment the corrupt nature and lack of transparency of both nations would result in the money being wasted and usupred by those Governments. With this project its something tangible, and there is accountability for it to get completed. Ethiopia has a Gas pipline being built from Ogadeniya to Djbouti, Oil is being discovered in Puntland, and traders in Somailand have a new, much more profitable outlet. Something constructive is being done in this region besides famine and mayhem so I'm excited.

One word,

Air-conditioning

I survived Bosaso to Gaalkacyo by car, why wouldn't it be possible

Puntland is not even a real desert, it has many acacia trees (Qurac's) and small vegetation and is quite rocky and not sandy/dusty.
