....was born as Mark Hanson in Walla Walla, Washington and was raised in Northern California in a Greek Orthodox family, the son of a US academic father, veteran of World War II, and activist mother. At the age of 17, in 1977, Hanson converted to Islam in Santa Barbara, California, after having a near-death experience in a car accident which led him to read the Qur'an and eventually become a Muslim.

Hamza Yusuf is one of the most eloquent speakers i've heard...he is quite the linguist. he comes to the annual R.I.S. convention held in Toronto around the end of the year. I can't wait to see him again this year along with Imam Zaid Shakir and other Zaytuna Institute scholars of course.

Sheikh Hamza is great, I like his khutbas. He travelled far and wide to gain Cilm, he always is fond of his teacher in the rural areas of Mauritania where he spent a long time

And the fire fighters of 9/11 were mujahideen according to him, wal'iyadu bilaah. Im not suprised that people are excited by his speech, because in the saheeh of Bukhari, the prophet(salalhu aleyhi wasalaam) is reported to have said 'some speech is effective as magic'.

He was an invited guest at Congress during Bush's speech at a time when he was under constant attack by Jews & neo-cons for his anti-American speeches, he had very little choice in attending that rally:

Before 9/11, Hanson, a convert to Islam, was known for his high-pitched, hysterical rhetoric in denouncing America. His manner was notable in that many radical Muslim clerics tended to affect a quieter demeanor, even when dispensing a message of venomous hatred. Hanson, by contrast, appeared to have taken his oratorical cues from newsreels of Adolf Hitler or the harangues of Fidel Castro.

Hanson's bigoted declamations are well recorded and widely-known. As previously noted on FSM in 1995 Hanson described Judaism as "a most racist religion." On September 9, 2001, two days before 9/11, Hanson hollered in Los Angeles, "This country (America) unfortunately has a great, a great tribulation coming to it. And much of it is already here, yet people are too illiterate to read the writing on the wall."
