I agree with the following points:-

" The wife is not his merchandise, he can not do whatever he wants to her"
"Even if the wife forgives the husband, it does not mean that Allah (swt) will forgive him on the Day of Judgment" (That's if he strikes her in the face, or causes her considerable injury thus violating the Law set down by Allah (swt)

As I understand it striking the wife is a LAST resort, he must talk to her first, then refuse to share the bed with her etc. The sheikh also mentioned that he cannot bruise her or strike her in the face. Anyhow, it is a very sensitive subject and not something to be joked about. Great care should be taken, Insha-Allah.

Now, this is where I draw the line. That verse is probably one of the most misinterpreted verses in the Qur'an. It only applies to if the woman fails to obey the husband regarding her Islamic duties e.g. if she refuses to pray or cover. This is a last resort, first you must talk to her, then scold her, leave her bed, etc. then lastly you strike her. The Prophet (saw) was asked "Strike her with what?" He responded "With a Siwak and only on her hands & feet." What is a Siwak? Cadey Soomaali and only gently. It doesn't say to beat the poor woman in the sense we know it as.

Salaam, can you reference this part please, only I'v come across a complete difference reason,..

+chilli,

"As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means of annoyance. Surely, Allaah is Ever Most High, Most Great"

{al-Nisa 4:34}

The scholars agree "ill-conduct" reffers to her neglecting her Islamic duties. It doesn't apply to a woman who refuses to cook for her husband or clean for him, since there is no Islamic literature which proves this.

I am not too fond of remote controls, however....I do enjoy throwing TV at her from time to time.
