Another success of the pro-ICU media was in dehumanizing the groups inside the TFG which mostly came from a warlord background. During the last 17 years, because of the clan wars in the country since the fall of Siad Barre in 1991, it is common knowledge that each clan community had its own protector or guardian that was armed and trained. Therefore, warlords and their militias were a defensive mechanism, a shield for each clan community in Somalia. We have seen such natural tendencies all around the world historically. But when the pro-ICU media and their supporters transformed warlord into an insult and dehumanizing word, it helped shape up an anti-TFG western view, particularly among the human rights activists and the American congressmen who wanted hard to change the Bush administration's support for TFG. So these tactics influenced both Somalis and the international community against the TFG and Ethiopia.

It is important to note that the ICU's military leadership also was represented by rival warlords but this was always ignored by the media.

By the way the TFG has slowly disarmed the warlords; the last to go was Mohamed Dheere. The fact is with a government we can correct our mistakes but with Al-shabaab we can expect more division such as the Asmara group, the Djibouti group, and the Al-shabaab group...and there are even further reports of division with in the Al-shabaab group: the Abuu Mansoor wing, the Caweys gar-cilaanle wing, and Hassan Turki wing. What is all this division if as they say their fighting in the name of Islam since Islam is uniting factor? Self explanatory really, this was an ICU propaganda of religious war in the first place and never about Islam.

It has been a perfect "free" market, with each community and clans having various media outlets, they added fuel to the long civil war. Lacking government regulation, only America's Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bankrupt financial institutions have rampaged more inside an uncontrolled free market. The anarchy inside Somalia was mostly based on clan or sub-clan wars, and as expected the private media in Somalia was the exact replica of the clan arrangements and divisions. Just like each clan had its own militias and warlords, they also each had a media outlet or more. With the Hawiye clan dominating the politics in Mogadishu, it was typical that most of the media was owned by them in the area, particularly by the Habar Gidir sub-clan of the region. And since the ICU leader Sheik Aweys is from the Habar Gidir clan, as are most of the ICU fighters and supporters, the media superiority of the pro-ICU Habar Gidir of the Hawiye clan was multiplied exponentially, one example being Shabelle Media Network and co who have very significant audience on the ground in Mogadishu and surroundings. For this reason, the anti-TFG and anti-Ethiopia propaganda by these media outlets began since day one, with allegations of Ethiopian soldiers raping Somali women and TFG soldiers robbing businesses.
