Somalia's Asha Hagi Wins The "alternative Nobel"

A U.S. journalist, a German gynecologist and activists from India and Somalia share this year's Right Livelihood Award, also known as the "alternative Nobel. ." Organizers say the 2 million kronor (US$290,000) award was split in four parts. American Amy Goodman was honored in Wednesday's announcement for her independent political journalism, while Germany's Monika Hauser was cited for her work to help sexually abused women. Somalia's Asha Hagi was awarded for her peace work and the last part of the prize was shared by Indian couple Krishnammal and Sankaralingam Jagannathan for their efforts to promote social justice. The prize was founded to recognize work organizers felt was ignored by the prestigious Nobel Prizes.
