The mother of an 11-month-old child was arrested and charged with leaving the child in a locked car while she was in a Shop Rite supermarket on Route 18 in East Brunswick, police said today.

Olha Yefremova, 23, of Helmetta, was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Monday after officers received a report of the child being left in the car, authorities said.

Officer Kevin Bolch found the girl sleeping in a car seat in a Toyota sedan, police said. The car were windows were open slightly.

Officer Jeffrey Marino went to the supermarket to find the owner, and discovered Yefremova was at the register checking out groceries, police said.

Yefremova, who told police she did not want to disturb the sleeping toddler, was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said.

The girl was temporarily given to a relative while Yefremova was in custody, police said. Yefremova was released, pending a court hearing.

Police notified the state Division of Youth and Family Services.
