Mashallah, Another African Success Story

Postby AbdiWahab252 » Thu Oct 09, 2008 9:37 am

Malawi

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7651977.stm

Food self sufficiency thanks to a government that told the IMF & World Bank to fock off and provided its farmers with subsidized fertilizer and good maize seed.

Somalia too can become food self sufficient if it had a caring government like Malawi's.

Shirib,

The rich countries subsidize their farmers to the tune of billions and when donating food aid, they give poor countries that cheap subsidized food which wrecks the local farm out put.

Warsan,

I am glad that you enjoyed the post.

MissNalia,

Yay for Malawi

AbuShabab,

Somalis need to learn to become self sufficient when it comes to food production. It makes no sense that we can not feed 10 million people from the vast farmlands of the South. We also need to learn to return to eating our native staples: sorghum, maize, beans, sesame seed etc and shun imported food like spaghetti, wheat, rice.

Yea, I know its really not aid but just a way to keep rich country farmers from going broke.

I remember this WFP guy once said we should just give African countries good seeds and we wouldn't have to keep doing this, and he got fired the next day

AW,

This will never work the greater Somalia. Aid is must for some areas, while others will work to sustain self sufficiency. Some people in Somalia, will rather receive then earn. They will rather beg then sweat. So, how can such a program will work in Somalia?

FAH,

Not anymore and even if they had a pasta factory, not enough wheat is produced in country

Xidigow,

Motivate them. No food aid unless there is a drought
