I did it unintentionally and now I feel bad because they seem to have choked on the words when I asked.

In Western customs, one's illness like many other things is considered a private matter. Unless someone voluntarily tells you, I wouldn't ask.

I'm Somali too, and I would be uncomfortable and consider it an invasion of privacy if you'd asked me that. Its just the way I was raised. I also find it offensive when ppl ask me how much I make, etc...thats none of their business.
