hamari is a loaded word. in my family's case, my mom, grand mom, great grand mom, great, great grand mom, great, great, great grand mum, up to 1000's of years ago wore abaya/shukkah. lamagodley females started wearing hijab the last 20 years.

yaa waxa kugu sheekeya before your portuqeez came to somalia , Somalis where muslims xijaabku na wuu jiiray. when did the first portugeez somalis came to somalia in 16 centry dee wagaas diintii sii fiican buu geeska uga socday remmember axmed guuray and his jihaad against the christian Ethiopian kings.

who is portugese? my ancestors r from south yemen.

somali lamagodley females wore a scarf----and revealing dress. they started wearing hijab late 1980s-early 90's.

give credit to flight 13 lamagodley females, they started proudly wearing hijab in public en masse in the west when the lamagodleys who came to the west prior to the civil war never knew hijab and didnt wear in the west.

American Sufi,

American,

You are correct to some extent, however, the hijaab thing was not specific to flight 13eners only, it became popular all over in the mid to late 90s and been steadily becoming the norm. Thanks to the war and because Somalis in the west are so afraid of assimilation, that they appease themselves by appearing to be more religious.

I alway argue with my mom about this, she really believes Somalis are now more educated about Islam, and I don't agree with her. I believe for the most part, they are not more educated per se, just dress more religious-like.

I've noticed this phenomenon too Wallahi...i used to work at some call center that was filled with Somalis and there were several girls who stayed covered up head-to-toe, cabaayads and everything. Then one time i was at this wedding and most of the girls from work were there...some of the ones who used to cover up pretty much looked the same except they weren't covered up (diracs, surwaals, hair done up). Waanba yaabay....and the funny thing is, the next day at work, maro bey isku duubeen again and were lowering their gaze politely as if nothing ever happened
