WOW....Somalis actually fought during WWI in 1916!!!

Postby Real_Talk » Sat Apr 11, 2009 1:30 am

I was just doing a random search on google about news related to Somalia dating back from 1900-1930 and I ran up on this amazing story.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=5R ... dq=somalia

The headline is a bit racist but the rest of the story is pretty good.

"Proud Tribesman prove efficient fighter, but never resort to savagery" @ them expecting all black people to be animals

Some highlights from the article if you ain't got time to read:

- 264 Somalis actually got awards for bravely in a battle in France
- the fighters came mostly from what was then British Somaliland
- the French were surprised by how much pride Somalis had
- the Somali fighters learned quickly how to use the guns
- Somalis were also clean and never drank alcohol which surprised the whites

All in all its a very interesting read for anyone here interesting in a little told part of Somali history.

what is amasing or great about fighting for your colonizers and oppressors. People who thought of you as little more than a monkey. Please have some dignity and stop speaking as if though we're suppose to proud of these people.

Exactly, what did they fight for, for what agenda/interest? They've helped imperialists take more control.
