Official: Ethiopia arrests 35 for coup plot

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — An Ethiopian government spokesman says police have arrested 35 people suspected of attempting to overthrow the government.

Government spokesman Ermias Legesse says the group was arrested Friday with weapons, communication equipment, military uniforms and written plans. He says it calls itself the "May 15" group after controversial 2005 elections held on that date.

Ermias said Saturday the group was established by former opposition leader Berhanu Nega. Berhanu was elected mayor of Addis Ababa in 2005 but arrested afterward with more than 100 other opposition politicians and tried for treason. He and the others were freed by a pardon in 2007.

He's now assistant professor of economics at Bucknell University in Lewisberg, Pa., the university's Web site says.

Are you at all familiar with the incident where a young Somali boy (from Canada) was arrested and currently is. He travelled to the Ogaden region to do some filming. However b/c of his apparent relation to one of the past leaders of the ONLF, the Ethiopian gov. decided to detain him for some ludicrious reason. And not a single out-cry from the international world. Its horrific walahay whats happening in the Ogaden. My prayers go out to all vicitim of the Zenawi rule, no-one is exempt from this injustice.

this is a ploy by the former Albanian Communist turned capitalist aka Melez to derail the democratic process in Ethiopia... there are trumped charges whose intent is intimidation and marginalization. this is a major test for Ethiopians and how they react to it will reveal the level of their political development.

actually he didnt make it to ogadenia,he traveled to muqdisho to do bussines but than the ethiopians invaded.once he entered kenya fleeing the bombing of joint ethiopian/american jets,he was arrested by kenyan border gurds and handed over to the tigree regime becouse of his name.
his grandfather was one of the founders of onlf.
