Basically the heart of the article
Conversations with Linden’s African Americans reveal that the cause of the conflict is
more than a misunderstanding of group-specific differences. The contrast between their
longstanding marginalization and the early entrepreneurial success of the Somalis (evident by the
two incubator business malls that serve approximately 100 Somali-owned businesses in Linden)
fuels the frustration felt by many of Linden’s African Americans
(participant observation,
personal interview with Somali business owner, 11/13/04). As one African American man put it:
“We’ve been here for 400 years and haven’t gotten a break yet. They got a break after just a
decade” (personal interview with African American male Linden resident, 03/08/04). Implicit
within this quote is the idea that many of Linden’s African Americans believe Somalis are
getting money from the government. City officials have denied these claims (personal interview
with city/NGO official, 04/11/05).

Babygirl

It is not about mixing to be honest. 11 houses in my Neigbourhood went into Foreclosure and obviously the biggest people to pay the price were African Americans since they are majority in the city, but in their twisted mind is how you come folks arent suffering. How the hell do they know we arent. Have they been checking my parents Accounts. Every city Somalis move to the worst and abandoned part of town and rebuild it.

“I had a[n African American] parent in here [school counselor’s office] last week to fill
out a FAFSA8 form for her exceptionally bright daughter. The parent refused to fill out
the FAFSA form saying, ‘I didn’t get a chance to go to college, why should she?’”

It's cultural and religious differences, somali's are all muslim and AA's are not, conflict was bound to happen. I also notice ethiopians get along with AA's/blacks easier than somali's because of religious commonality.

Just look at razzberry's topic as an example, she considered those youtube videos about those girls in bikini's innocent, while a somali, usually from the older generation would freak out and call those girls love's.

There needs to be some sort of understanding between both groups, laakin, with all disenfranchised poor people(somalis and AA's, even poor whites), xenophobia and mistrust tends to keep people hating each other.

Those happily married/coupled educated women who are challenging themselves to get in shape by exercise and pushups could probably care less what some old people think of them. :P

Reberl

Walaahi it has nothing to do with Religion because if you pay attention to the blogg's of AA Muslim almost all still hate Somali's. I have come to the conclusion that we will never understand each other because we View the world along Religion and ethnic and they View the world along Race. Example some AA Muslims View the Palestinian issue as an Arab issue while we View it as an Islamic Issue. AA Muslims hate Somalis, Pakistanis, Indian and Arabs more than any other people.

And there is a clear line and division among the Black community in ATL. All the poor Blacks in the city come from states like Alabama and the native Wealthier ones discriminate against them.

Awdal,

Actually its not discrimination, a lot of the time its warrented because of the terrible attititude the poorer blacks have, and the hate they have for the well off ones. The best blacks I've met are the ones that are doing well, and the worst are the ones that are not.

The biggest Mistake African Americans make in my opinion is they assume just because one shares color with them, they will be on their side and assimilate with them. Three houses down from my house is an African American Family and though we have lived so close to each other for 11 years now, we have never mingled because they think we are too white. This has been confirmed by our neigbours who spoke to them who are Pakistani. This article proves that Somalis will never assimilate into any culture. We assimilate others into ours.

Too white? WTF, dude!

The one and only think I have and that the black American doesn't is tribe, and knowing where I come from

That in itself is huge !It makes all the difference in my opinion, and it changed the way I view the AA.
Even the hateful ones , I just feel sorry for them as opposed to disliking them .
The first hateful towards me person I have encountered in the United States was a black woman who thought I was @the Social Security building to get welfare {like her} when in fact I was getting my card ..I was truely shocked !
