Big attack on Mogadishu Islamists

Somalia's Western-backed government forces have launched a major attack against Islamist militants in the capital, Mogadishu.

The assault is an attempt to recapture areas seized by the rebels last week.

Our correspondent in Mogadishu says the sound of heavy gunfire and shelling can be heard across the city.

Forces loyal to the transitional government in Somalia lost control of about one-third of the capital to militants last week.

More than 34,000 civilians are reported to have been displaced by the latest upsurge of violence.

The BBC's Mohamed Olad Hassan, in Mogadishu, says the pro-government forces have launched a massive military offensive against the insurgents.

The African Union peacekeepers based in the capital to support the fragile administration are not involved in the attack, he adds.

We just got a Call from Mogadishu and interesting enought the Prime Minister has taken a leading role at the moment. It is said he ordered this Massive Military Offenisve and Put the 2,000 Puntlanders (Ciidamada Dowladda) and everyone else to Work.

Just yesterday he was saying "War is the only language alshaaab understands"

I guess he has started to speak their Language Soon they will come to understand each other once they are cleared out of the whole of Mogadishu.

The reason why Sacid Dheere was fired was because he claimed a troop strength of 2000 when his actual strength was roughly around 700.

These exaggerated numbers are designed to milk more funding from the government. It is the typical Somali dirty hand at play .

It is never about numbers, it is about what guy has the most to lose. And when I say most to lose, I mean the fighter on the street who is fighting the battler.

By the way, Rest in Peace to the Shabelle Reporter who died today. These guys work under very dangerous situations bringing us upto the minute updates of the unfolding events to the Somali Diaspora. The job they do is indispensable and it is always a tragedy when one of them dies performing their job.

Sacid Dheere is not fired, he is one of the guys leading the battle today. but dude 700 men is a lot seriously. Al Shabaab captured Kismayo with 300 men. But I do understand what you mean by what one has to lose and gain from a battle. Nerver the less these guys are soldiers pay them and surely they will do their jobs.

Sacid Dheere was fired and his spot was taken by some Marehan dude (I can't remember his name now).

I support this government as matter of principle but I don't believe that it is led by the right leadership. Regardless of what happens today and in the battles to come, the necessity to change the leadership still remains.
