Kenya Ready to Intervene in Somalia
MOGADISHU (HOL) - The government of Kenya has announced plans to intervene in Somalia because the security situation in Somalia is deteriorating.
The foreign Minister of Kenya Mr. Moses Watengula announced Kenya’s intention to intervene in Somalia after a meeting with representatives from the European Union.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Minister’s after the meeting with European Union representatives, the Minister said that the meeting was held at the order of the President of Kenya Mr. Mwai Kibaki who said that the deteriorating security situation in Somalia endangers the strategic interests of Kenya.
Although the Minister was not specific about the kind of intervention Kenya intends, he did not, however, rule out the possibility of military intervention in Somalia.
The Minister also said that IGAD countries are examining ways to support the Somalia government which is under deadly daily attacks by Islamic militants who want to overthrow it.
The remarks of Kenya’s foreign Minister come a day after a suicide bomber attacked a hotel in the city of Beletweyne where Somalia’s Minister of national security was holding a meeting with elders and other notable persons of the region. The national security Minister died in the attack along with the former Somalia ambassador to Ethiopia as well as many civilians, elders, and community leaders.
