im about to be 20 and can't speak somali... i think im hopeless

fah i was about to ask you, do your parents laugh at you when you try?
wallah my father is bully too when it comes to speaking broken somali.lol

if i want to speak i make sure he is not around and practise with his friends and uncle and step mother.lol

I learned Somali the tough way. I got bullied by family members and local childhood friends. I soon picked up on the language and before I knew it I could speak and write it fluently.

Bullying is the way forward when it comes to learning Somali

2 months in miyi , i never talked to any one unless they speak to me broken arabic.lol
i used to nod my head yes or no, i was so scared to say wong word when i mean some thing else.

and my father bullies me enough that i dont want even to speak somali ever.

same here hyper, my father used to bully me to. walahi he would straight up laugh at me sometimes.

my mother was total opposite, she praised our Somali even tho it sounded like crap.

at the end, it is ur own effort in learning Somali. u got nobody to blame but urself, b/c even some white people taught themselves Somali.

Cinque Mtume, i agree ith you man that it's up to you to want to learn.

im not that much motivated now but who knows maybe in the future i would like to speak it.

i heard once you get older you want to back to your roots and appriciate your culture.

that's true, but it's better to learn while ur young and find ur place with Somalis. when u get older it will become hard to learn and hard to be accepted. u will risk the chance to always be seen as outsider to ur own ppl.

minny, columbus, norway, canada

or they lived in somalia way back when

i dont have that, i've tried but its way too hard... shid arabic is easier for some reason

waryaa you are from a Somali family and you have Somali relatives and don't tell me there are no Somalis in your area.

Nobody said it would be a walk in the park, but ur making excuses.

That's messed up! If getting bullied by the elders in your family isn't enough, now he's getting it from his own peers.
