Have Masjids Become Social Clubs?

You might think my question is outrageous, but hear me out first. More & more I've been carefully paying attention to the sort of people who frequent Masjids. On the surface, they appear pious & God fearing and for the most part they are, but there are those who take the whole experience to a whole another level. They always stick to one Masjid (e.g. Somali Masjids ONLY) or Ikhwaan Masjids or Sufi Masjids. You'll never see them pray elsewhere.

When they're at the Masjid, they act like top-dogs, running their mouth about everything & dictating every aspect of the Masjid's functioning. The first 2 lines are usually reserved for them, sorta like a status hierarchy, can you believe it? They usually bring a herd of their kids or grand kids and let them run amock inside. There was this 1 crazy kid who would slap the bottoms of the men while we did rukooh and as soon as we finish the salah, he's nowhere to be seen. They park their cars whereever they want, I get blocked almost every Friday by one of them and have to wait a good 30 mins to find them.

When there's a community dinner, they act as food critics, war xagee lagu arkay nin cunto ka hadlaayo? And the Masjid is super-packed, good luck finding a spot to park. When someone wants to do a fund-raising for back home, it usually has to be a region where the top-dogs are from or have connection to, otherwise gaw iyo gash ma leh.

Its a very unattractive & disturbing trend. Wagii hore Masaajidka waxaa loo aadi jiray for salah and that was it. But nowadays, its turning in to something else. And the clerics are silent about it. No respect for its sanctity. You'll see men talking about qabiil & the war right about the same time as the imaam is calling for the iqaamah.

Hang-out spots?

That's why I like praying where there are people from other backgrounds , I don't UNDERSTAND what the hell they're saying when they're talking among themselves:lol:

If you ask Turks they will say yes to your question, cause Turkish masjids have following amenities, foosball (football table) table tennis, pool table, coffe shop, grocery (halal meat) and many more

I see it too.

Doctors & the big players usually chill-out at the front, first time I saw it, I couldn't believe my eyes.

Sahan,

That's a good idea. I try to diversity and visit a different Masjid every now & then.

Turks are civilized people.

I only go pray where the crowd is more friendly, reserved and attentive towards the imaam. I'm not into extracurricular activities in the mosque. I don't understand why people bring little kids that run around wild, couple times I felt like trippin those juvenile delinquents

New immigrants tend to congregate at place of worships not only for spritual reasons, but to socialise and connect with their community. Unlike well-established communities, new-comers do not have social clubs that cater to all ages groups and which is more than a picnic here or a soccer game there. So, don't be surprised if the Masjid has become more than a place of worship. People are isolated and alienated and need to reconnect at least once a week. I grant you though, the muslims and especially Somalis need to learn more edeb, respecting their fellow worshipers and not use the masjid as a baby-sitting facilty/playground.

Yeah akhi i kinda notice that. That same group of guys are first to tell you when your doing something wrong and not in a kind way, but in a harsh way and often putting off newcomers to the masjid. My masjid has a clique of brothers both somali and pakistani that come across as your description

Qof ma aragtay aad ku odhanayso sii daacad ah " walle , oo xaggey ka dhacday arrintaasi ?"

oo kugu jawaabaya " hebel waydi isaga ku sheegi e !"

Somalidi qabyaaladi ba maskaxda ka wastay .
Mid baad ku odhanaysa " war halkaa igu sii tuur "
Intu ku kaxeeyo , o gas iska khasaariyo bu kuu gaynaya mid aad is xigtan , markaasu ku odhanaya " kan sii raac!"

Intu sii socday iyo intu dib u noqonayo , isagoo iska kaa dhiga halka aad rabtay baa uga dhawayd .
Dadkaas oo computer la soo wada daba dhigay , ka warama?

Dhibaatooyinka gudhuda haysata waa tanoo kale
