I think you could be tempted to make the comparison that you have made. But I think the song can be truly understood once the listener goes through the common theme of the album. It is a song about being "getting lost and get found," basically someone who is confused about life and being rescued by someone else and the narrator's eventual moving towards his rescuer.

The song Viva La Vida is certainly about the fall of the British empire & the demise of the English and I can offer 101 reasons why this is so. I totally hate people who give a theological explanation for this song and album itself.

Some people will swear to you that U2 is a religious band and will offer you some very convincing reasons. But ColdPlay is not and it is simpleminded to accuse them of being one. Chris Martin is a cool kid above such simple labelings

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]

The scholar of the ummah, Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabi’in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. All of this happens only in the case of the people who are most stubbornly kaafirs and if some of it happens to singers and those who listen to them, they both have a share of this blame. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).

Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This hadeeth indicates that ma’aazif are haraam, and ma’aazif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all such instruments. (al-Majmoo’, 11/535).

Actually, alot of people harbor these views. So you are not alone.

I don't know that much about ColdPlay except that I really liked Viva La Vida. I actually thought it was about Louis XIV.

I don't think he could be talking about the British Empire b/c the Empire didn't collapse it sort of withered away gracefully. This has the elements of a coup or a revolution in these lyrics:

Actually no. When did Louis XIV ever had navies that would raise the seas and when did he ever control an empire that extended his country?

England had the most powerful navy in the world. It controlled a huge junk of the known world. The sun never set in the Brit empire. "sweep the streets I used to rule" basically means how the Brits are now moving to America and India for opportunity and work

LMFAO I am not even like that. Funny thing is I consider myself open minded and used to listen to music of every kind (I don't listen to music anymore ) but I really don't think this stuff is even a little bit interesting.
