assalamu aleykum wa rahmatullah,
Imaam ibn Hajar al asqalani (rahamahullah) says,
I grasped the manners that should be observed by those
who like to sit on the roadside from the sayings
of the best man Allah created:
to give greeting, to give supplication to those who sneeze
and to give thanks to Allah, reply to those who give you greetings,
lend a hand to those carrying heavy burdens,
give support to the oppressed,
come to the rescue of those who are in difficulty,
give roaddirections, give advice to those who need it,
enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil,
not to stare at passers by,
and remember Allah while you are sitting.
Ibn Hajar took these manners from the following ahadith,
abu sa'id al khudri narrated that the prophet (sallahu aleyhi wasalaam) said "Beware! Avoid sitting on the roads." They (the people) said, "O Allah's Apostle! We can't help sitting (on the roads) as these are (our places) where we have talks." The Prophet said, "If you refuse but to sit, then pay the road its right." They said, "What is the right of the road, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Lowering your gaze, refraining from harming others, returning greeting, and enjoining what is good, and forbidding what is evil".( collected by bukhari and muslim)
