In Somalia, a Twist on 'Handshake Diplomacy'

NAIROBI, Aug. 5 -- Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Somali President Sharif Ahmed are expected to discuss weighty security issues when they meet in this city Thursday. But many Somalis will be paying close attention to a more delicate, but highly symbolic, matter of diplomacy: whether the two will shake hands.

"The talk is everywhere," said Abdirhaman Mumin, a Somali sugar exporter who is hoping for the handshake. "Will he or won't he? For many people, whether he's loyal to Islam or not depends on the handshake."

Somalia is a traditionally moderate Muslim country. Music and poetry are treasured, and handshaking between men and women -- taboo according to some conservative readings of Islam -- has long been considered normal. But since the collapse of the last central government in 1991, a more conservative strain of Islam has taken hold, with Somalis depending more on Islamic law to establish order.

No.

I don't think he will shake her hand because Shiekh Sharif and Al Shabaab at the end of the day really subscribe to the same religious belief system. The fundamentals they agree on but it is the methadology and how to apply it they disagree on.

My bet would be that he'll give her one of those awkward wadaad waves, from like six feet away, but come photo-op time, stand less than an inch-away. Shoulder rubbing against shoulder. Now that's diplomacy.

There are two common hadiths concerning shaking hands with the opposite sex. In the first hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, "I do not shake hands with women" (Al-Bukhari).

The second hadith is narrated on the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, "The female slave from Madinah would take hold of the hand of Allah's Messenger and lead him wherever she wished, without withdrawing her hands from his hands until the Prophet fulfils her need" (Ahmad).

Based on the two hadiths, we conclude that the basic rule discourages shaking hands with members of the opposite sex, but if one were put in an awkward situation, then there would be no harm to shake hands with members of the opposite sex. This ruling applies to Muslims living in the West because of the social customs prevailing in these countries.

Just because the Prophet (p) didnt do something doesnt mean that it is haraam, we know for instance that he didnt eat lizards but that didnt mean it is haraam.

I can't touch a women thats not my mahram let alone shaking hands, and there are several hadiths confirming this.
