Good question surrender , I was asking myself the same thing last night .
If I can refrain from smoking during the day why not go all the way , this opportunity {Ramadan} should be a good launching pad to eventually quit altogether, right ?

 ..well easier said than done !

Ramadhan should be stepping stone in quiting chewing and smoking alltogether.

SOME KNOWN EFFECTS OF KHAT!

- when its effects wear off, generates mild lapses of depression similar to those observed among cocaine users.

SIDE EFFECTS RESEACHED BY THE BBC (2004)
So just what effect does Khat have on our bodies? Presenter Paul Ross, under the close supervision of leading health expert, Dr. Iain Murray-Lyon, tried Khat himself.

Don't try this at Home. Ross says Khat is unpleasant to taste
He grimaced as he chewed the leaves describing it as "astringent". After about an hour Ross spoke of the effects, "I feel trembly and a bit hyper like I've had too much coffee and a bit hot.

"Take it from me, Khat tastes disgusting. My blood pressure has shot up and my head aches," moans Paul.

The effects are weaker than cocaine or methamphetamine. But Khat can still trigger paranoia and hallucinations, and may even lead to mouth cancer and heart disease.

The Home Office is currently investigating whether Khat causes long term health damage and should be banned.

Its drugs and alcohol unit is carrying out a study to assess the health risks involved in taking the mild narcotic.

hope it helps.

Did you know it gets sold in Israel in the form of an energy drink? True story.
Now, if according to our fundamentalist brethren (and all other conspiracy lovers) the Jews run the world, then would it not stand to reason that the Jews will never sell something harmful to their own people? Therefore Khat is not harmful.

The only thing I chew is tobacco. Its a bad habit that has plagued me since my travels to Africa early 2004. Alhamdullilah I dont chew qaat or smoke cigarettes so there really is no balwad.

Rural chewing Tobacco is worse than smoking it , I think.

I remember years ago when i was about 11..seeing our Arab neighbours son ( about 17-19 ) and his friends smoking during Ramadan in the stairwells outside our apartments..the minute they saw me ..they dispersed. I doubt any smoker can fast..and if they do they are usually very irritable and given to fits of swearing, huffing and puffing.

^^ Yes its true depending on how you do it. Two fat heads of tobacco is obviously less harmful than a guy who smokes 10 cigarettes a day. It depends on how you utilise, misuse or even abuse the product.
