One good thing Somalis are copying from each other is higher education nowadays, I can't imagine how many Somali students I have seen in universities and colleges all across America. All my friends from age 20-40 are in universities or graduated already.
Although Somalis use to copy each other from bad stuff, whether it's khat, guns, fadhi kudirir, driving taxi or truck, nowadays it's getting a bachelor degree.
when I get my Associate, 4 of my friends enrolled in college, when my brother get his bachelor and get hired earning $60000 salary, 5 for of family and friends quit their jobs and joined college.
So now,everybody I see, is either in college, or is in the process or starting one now, or has already graduated.
so finally good think to copy from your friends.

That's the problem with most Somalis...their motivation strictly comes from trying to make sure they're not too far behind other Somalis. Which ain't a bad thing, if everybody is getting degrees. Even then though, they're usually happy with getting the degree everybody else is getting...once they get their Bachelor's, you ask them about their Master's and they'll be like "why...did somebody else get theirs? "

I've said it before, Somalis will usually be content with being 2nd from the bottom as long as they know they're ahead of the only other Somali in the group. Of course, there are exceptions...rare exceptions.

It also has to do with the fact the PEOPLE LEFT Somalia. The pursuit of higher education is a part of western assimilation. As bad as this sounds, it's true!

yea I notice that too, most Somalis motivations comes from competing with the next Somali, not with the world. we are so local, we never thing global. and that is why we fighting today in Somalia, because we can't let another Somali rule us.

you need to go to higher education in order to make a difference in the world, to change the world, and to benefit your country and people, not to compete and envy the next Somali or tribe.

It's always an on going tartan with Somalideena, we're always in a way attempting to be better than next person, I guess in a way it's a motivating factor that keeps us intact.
