The internationally supported "Rich Quick Scheme" in Somalia
Money, Fame and betrayal the story of Somalia is something out of a movie. Somalis have a phrase for this particular con artist and master of deception that will be highlight in this piece. They are called “Calooshood u shaqeystayaal” in English word it means independent workers. In more defined Somali perspective it means a trusted politicians who is perceive by people a person of honesty and a candidate who can bring back real hope and a lasting peace in country that haven’t seen peace in more than a decade, surprisingly an opportunist emerge from what was soon to be a hero for a wide community.
It happens every time and every time innocent people pay for their life. Somalia has a unique political arena thanks to the widely divided land, punt land Somaliland south Somalia Etc. Reason for many of the division is deep clan hate that fuels civil war from time to time. people who have made a fortune in Somali politics no doubt took the risk of losing their life in the trail of chasing a lifetime dream. Some have made it big and got out quick (cabdullahi yusuf, mohamed geedi ali dheere etc), some perish into thin air (omar hashi, laqanyo etc) and some still pursuing their goal.(sheikh sharif ahmed, cabdirashiid sharmarke and associates) it even attracts different countries such as Ethiopia Uganda and Burundi.
Experience is often not necessity and it usually depends on what type of job you are looking for beside the old fashion way of “who do you know’. Once you get your foot in their expect a lot of back lashes and attempt on your life. if you do survive the alshabaab missiles, land minds and suicide bombing chance are slim though you are heavily guarded by Ugandan and Burundi troops who are paid by the international government through united nations as well as the paycheck you are risking your life on. There isn’t a lot of ground you can move on you are barricaded in villa Somalia and its surrounding. The only lifeline you have are the airport which constantly comes under missile attack when airplane is landing and lifting off and the port from which you can view western warships guarding the area which might give you sense of relieve of fear. Like an accountant before interview make sure you dress yourself like a bussinessman with a suit case and bring along a calculator and greet the president of somalia Ould abdalla.
In punt land resource are limited and almost every job has been fill but there are always opening in “secret assassins” and “pirate” these you can find anywhere around the country except the deep south which is the only regions in Somalia that are free from international funds and pirates. Sometimes In punt land and in Somaliland you get rewarded by turning in any Ogadenian you come encounter with to the Ethiopian government through punt land government. It has been done in the past in both region. you can create your own money if you have the proper machine to do so. There are also people who have made fortunate by kidnapping westerners and asking for ransom or by turning them over to the shabaabs who may negotiate them for a bigger cause.
Somalis in Diaspora often reminisce about back home and homes they left behind . They are part of the international community who pour money in to Somalia. Part of the tfg opposition accusation are that the Diaspora is filling all the key position in the government in punt land, Somaliland and in Muqdisho. Somali teens in the western world fantasize becoming a pirate and making million of dollar in one hit at the sometimes being recognize as heroes and patriots for being the coastguards for a country that has been long looted by big government who sent their fishing vessels to net millions of dollars worth of seafood and to dump their toxic waste in containers. Western Warships also patrol the coast of Somalia in defense of their interest and have laws that protect them when in reality they kidnap Somali coastgaurds and label them as pirates and take them to their countries to indict them.
