The Big Five Personality Traits

Postby poiuyt » Thu Dec 10, 2009 6:52 pm

This is a concept in modern psychology:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Five_p ... ity_traits
The Big Five factors and their constituent traits can be summarized as follows:
Openness - appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, curiosity, and variety of experience.
Conscientiousness - a tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement; planned rather than spontaneous behavior.
Extraversion - energy, positive emotions, urgency, and the tendency to seek stimulation in the company of others.
Agreeableness - a tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others.
Neuroticism - a tendency to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression, or vulnerability.
From a scale of 1 to 10 here's how I rate the average Somali on these qualities:

Openness: 1

Somalis are very closed minded people. Tribalism, Islam, an extreme distaste for getting out of their comfort zone, etc, all add up to make Somalis one of most closed minded people on the Earth.

Conscientiousness: 3

Lack of self-control is the root cause of the endless tribal feuding in Somalia. Seemingly, no Somali has the capacity to "rise above" such pettiness. The emotions aroused by tribalism are very strong and your average Somali finds it hard to overcome them. Moreover, Somalis don't seem to plan anything. They are collectively like a raft being carried by the waves. We are on the whole a very, VERY passive people. Except when we're violent.

Extraversion: 10

Yep, we're very energetic and urgent when we're in social situations and derive a tremendous amount of enjoyment from social gatherings.

Agreeableness: 5

We can be agreeable to kin, distant kin and other sub-clan members but we find it hard to extend this courtesy to people of other clans. If two somalis are strangers to each other and of different clans, there isn't really any sort of binding obligation between them and there is no trust.

Neuroticism: 2

We're not neurotic because of our tribal systems and religion which provide a degree of social cohesion that help work against any ills such as depression/anxiety/wild mood swings.
