To make it short the trees history in Somalia has been one of negligence caused by ignorance, the trees would have been extinct had it not been for the Kacaans bolt and persistent actions, Mashallah they( the Kacaan grass roots ) did a brilliant job in preserving and replanting trees throughout Somalia
but unfortunately after the fall of the last government people started to destroy the forest, cutting down trees out of desperation and ignorance, this is truly sad because a tree takes long time to grow and without trees there is no biodiversity so droughts appears more often and have longer durations.

Most of you might only recognize the Qurac as it’s the most common one, but there are many more, and their uses and benefits are beyond measure.

I personally want to grow some myself and for that to happen i need to learn more about trees in Somalia, basically their names in Somali and English, their uses for both human and livestock, the region they grow, time for it to reach maturity, the season they drop seeds, the best season to plant them etc etc

I much appreciate anyone who can give some educational input on this topic

trees is a must for pastoralist, Camels and Goats especially need trees ! but its a win win win, you get good biodiversity(hence, less droughts), your livestock have food, and you can benefit from the trees bark, fruits, roots, branches, leaves etc

you can sell them through transfer for further growth or as wood for building etc etc

go to old Somali men and ask them the names of trees and their uses, they know it very well.
also there is an a Somali author who wrote about Somali trees. I barrow the book from the library a year ago. the book is called "Magacyada geedaha Somalia"

We should plant xashiish and all sorts of drugs......become a major drug trafficking country, our location is just ripped for that type of business.

20 years back Somalia had both incredible wildlife and trees were not in shortage, but that is not the case today

but its possible that some of the names are nothing more than duplicates, in the sense that its the same tree but different name given by people from different regions.

im not a botanist, but i do study science.

there is huge potential in these trees as i have mentioned earlier, and with some humble further investigation by people educated in the fields of science(mainly Chem and Bio) we can attain pharmaceuticals and cosmetics from these trees

Me too. I have always been obsessed with trees and planting and growing things from a young age. I planted a Papaya tree in our backyard when I was like 6 and I remember we actually used to pick fruits from it within very short time. I think it would be a good idea, if you really enjoy these things, to make a career out of it. Pursue it! Met a dude from California once at this conference I attended who owned, with his wife and friend, a small fruit farm that generated over a million in revenue every year. That is not a lot of money if you think about it but the cost of running that farm, as he explained to me, was not even a quarter of the amount of money they made from it every year.
