Like I said, there were different expectations of the Mothers of the Believers because of the political situation at the time, hence the declaration in the Quran:

O Wives of the Prophet! You are not like any of the other women.

Abdullah bin Abbas reports that the Prophet was riding a camel with Al-Fadhl, Abdullah's brother, behind him. A beautiful woman came to ask the Prophet about the Hajj of her father. Al Fadhl began to stare at her; her beauty impressed him a lot. The Prophet (peace be upon him) having noticed this while Al Fadhl was busy looking, put his hand behind and turned his face away from her hither and thither as she went along with them. Here the Prophet SAW clearly states what is expected of women in terms of Cawrah

Ayesha (R) reported that Asmaa the daughter of Abu Bakr (R) came to the Messenger of Allah (S) while wearing thin clothing. He approached her and said: 'O Asmaa! When a girl reaches the menstrual age, it is not proper that anything should remain exposed except this and this. He pointed to the face and hands. (Abu Dawood)

I think this proves that niqaab is not Sunnah very clearly, I dont know why it seems so shocking to people

^^No actually it's compulsory to wear the full hijab and it is sunnah to cover the face i.e. niqab as the wives of the prophet(SCW) used to. In Islam if you aren't knowledgable in something the best thing to do is to not comment so as to not mislead people.
