Fostering success in the Somali community

Postby Oxy- » Mon Jan 18, 2010 3:43 pm

Its often said that adults are shaped by the earliest experiences they are as children. Consequently Parents have an enormous affect on who we become as adults.

Positive reinforcement is when children display good behaviour and parents acknowledge their actions by congratulating their children on their decisions. Such positive reinforcements allow children to connect that what they did has made their parents happy, and therefore was the correct choice.

Negative reinforcement is the opposite of positive reinforcement. When a child chooses to act inappropriately or misbehave, parents greet these behaviours with a negative attitude.

Psychologist all agree and say that parents should address the behaviour in negative terms and not the child. It is important that children do not feel that their parents believe that they are bad, irresponsible or stupid. Always addressing the behaviour, rather than the child, will help make this distinction.

Somalis Hooyo’s are well known for their harsh approach in teaching their ciyaal a lesson. Constant screaming and belittling the child for their misbehaviour is causing that child to prematurely fail as an adult in the future.

Markaa su’aasha we should be asking is – Are Somali hooyo’s responsible for the failings of many young Somali men and women? And more profoundly, is the state that Somalia is in, anywhere affiliated with the embedded culture Somali women raise their ciyaal ?

All you have to do is ask yourself these questions and i'm sure you'll have the quickest answer to inquiry.
- Was your hooyo harsh on you as a child?
- Have you failed as an adult?
