Malaysia, Singapore, Somalia, etc all these countries were ruled by benevolent dictatorships at the same time and each had notable achievements particularly Somalia where they still hold a record in literacy gains but the progress we have achieved since are representative of the general culture of the people.

Voltage is right AbdiWahab, compared to other African leaders such as Abacha, Mobutu, Bokassa, Eyadema, Bongo and the likes, Siad Barre was a very pragmatic leader who did not exploit his people, but did try his best to have Somalis successfully compete in the world. He was definitely no Kleptocrat.


Singapore is a very extreme example. It makes you raise the question, when a country stops being a republic and becomes a corporation. The Republic of Singapore is also known as a Singapore Ltd. Its Chinese leader received massive critique for threatening his own constituents that if they fail to work hard, they will be replaced by foreigners.

He made mistakes and some of his policies did not turn out so good but he did it with the interest of Somalia in mind and not his own interest in mind. Voltage and Abdiwahab, can you guys recommend any books on the economic history of the west. I t sounds very interesting, I agree, if aficans can apply the same economic principles as western countries (maybe even improve) we could vevntually bcome financially stable. I always thought that economic success comes in circles, first the greeks and romans, then the arabs, then the europeans and now asia. I have a feeling, in the next few decades africa can rise.
