(Took Basra's topic about Somalia)

Men would eat plates of blessings from their fingertips
little boys roamed, suckling on sweet mango
until the last drip reached the tongues tip
tasting nectar sweet as their mothers

In a melodic tone meant for men who sit above
Women would sit under trees and sing to the sky
telling tales of grazing days, of better days
reiterated by princesses sipping false tea

Today those cases cease to be
bullets and blood decorate the barren streets,
piled one after the other
desecrated bodies lay six feet,
poor mothers weep at their sons feet
forever in deep sleep,
ungodly men enter forbidden holes
and little girls bore at age four,
realities from the Horn
hear me the helpless cry!

lool ok horta I am not oxy but an old forumer

Secondly, abaayo I really mean it walahi...I just want to know cause u seem like someone who is very interested in literature like myself!

Oh and I have a question...I am writing a seminar paper about anything in the 19th century American literature so I thought of comparing Emily Dickenson's death themes to that of Sylvia Plaths although Plath is a 20th century American writer...I am sure I can connect the 2 together and parhaps show the influence on Plath by Dickenson....what do u think?

Poetry is something innate if we are Somalis, every politician in Somalia has to be great orally, poetry is one aspect of this, from Sayidka to even the Shababs leader today.

Besides, I am firm believer of never placing yourself in a box.

Btw, did you have a former nickname?

sadeboi me like what i am reading! there is a lack of good language usage though, but OK! :D

Oliveoil

Dickenson and Plath?? :o Horta May may---cough cough---excuse me Olive oil..skin.. ...WHAT IS YOUR OBSESSION WITH THESE TWO POETS??? why r u proned to depression and suicidal tendancy like these two mad women? Caudubilaahi!

Anyway-- i would not have any comment or advice for u since i detest anything ameican literature. However, if u go with your suggestion, it sure brings alot of complications. You would have to study both poetry and show how emily influenced Plath- and or do a compare and contrast deal. I suspect, the only thing they have in common is their love for death! :|

Sadeboi,

yeah, but Somalis nowadays don't have the same poetic capabilities as the previous generations...we can't even put a whole sentence together without adding "another" language

Anyways, maybe but I thought u mods can find out the IPs and such...last time I checked u were one, I guess. or maybe not

Emily Dickinon loved life, she loved it so much she became fixated with a fear of death. She wasnt that morbid, you can spot some self-depricating humor in some of her poetry too :) Like this one:

 I dreaded that first Robin, so,
But He is mastered, now,
I'm accustomed to Him grown,
He hurts a little, though --

I thought If I could only live
Till that first Shout got by --
Not all Pianos in the Woods
Had power to mangle me --

I dared not meet the Daffodils --
For fear their Yellow Gown
Would pierce me with a fashion
So foreign to my own --

I wished the Grass would hurry --
So -- when 'twas time to see --
He'd be too tall, the tallest one
Could stretch -- to look at me --

I could not bear the Bees should come,
I wished they'd stay away
In those dim countries where they go,
What word had they, for me?

They're here, though; not a creature failed --
No Blossom stayed away
In gentle deference to me --
The Queen of Calvary --

Each one salutes me, as he goes,
And I, my childish Plumes,
Lift, in bereaved acknowledgment
Of their unthinking Drums --
Olyalivo, you have great taste!

Naa heedhe walaalay magacayga ha'ku ciyaarin...its OLIVEOIL, get it right

abaayo, I have no idea why I am obsessed with Plath especially...I am the apposite of what they were...or maybe its the fact that I had suicidal tendencies at a very young age :P

But anywho, if I don't talk about them...the only writers in 19th century left to write about, that really mattered, are Poe, LongFellow, Hawthorn, and Emerson...and sadly their works are not as entertaining as Dickenson's and Plaths

But what do u think about my 2nd idea? "Or maybe their feminst side? Parhaps compare the corrupt relationships the 2 had with thier parents and how it influenced their work?"

May may.... :o

Cajiib badaana! This poem is bizarre. On the surface, a kind person would say it is about a day in the woods- where the poet, in walking alone and praising nature. but upon close examination-it is about emily's narcissism---proclaiming herself Queen. She is also having a conversation with herself and of course her imaginery friends the Daffodils, the grass, the beess. In short -- a capital bi polar!

why dont u write the dynamic/friction between Plath and her poet husband Huges? That would be fetching! How jealous he was of her writings. Can i write it for u? It will scandalous! :o
